Occasional anxiety is a normal part of our life.

All of us experience anxiety from time to time. Occasional anxiety is a normal part of our life. When it becomes a concern is when the anxiety lingers and is excessive, intense, persistent and causes one to worry about everyday situations. Feelings of intense anxiety often involve feelings fear and terror. From the outside looking in it might seem odd, even strange or peculiar to us why a person would be acting or feeling in such a way. But to individuals living with anxiety, their feelings and thoughts are very real and often concerning to them. Individuals living with anxiety, avoid situations or places to prevent these terrible feelings from surfacing. There are five types of anxiety disorders which include the following: social anxiety otherwise known as social phobia, specific phobias, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and agoraphobia. Some of the more common symptoms and signs of anxiety disorders are as follows: Rapid heart rate Shallow breathing Difficulty concentrating Excessive worry Unable to shut the thought process off Numbness and tingling to upper and lower extremities Sweating Feelings of impending doom Hyperventilating Avoidance of places objects people Pounding chest Restless Pacing Agitation Causes as they relate to anxiety disorder are not clearly understood but some of the risk factors involve: Genetic predisposition if you had an anxious parent who as a role model may have made you more prone to developing anxiety Trauma - experiencing an actual or perceived threat Environmental factors Stress Stages in one’s life; for example, adolescence or being elderly Losses that could involve significant others; may include job losses or the need to relocate for example. Other mental disorders Drug and alcohol use It is not uncommon to be living with one or more anxiety disorder type. A person may also be dual diagnosed with major depression while living with anxiety. The two can go hand in hand. It is worthy of mentioning that both can be treated simultaneously and one can live a very healthy, happy, productive life.
