Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing the worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a state of a mental health crisis.
Just as physical first aid is provided until medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate support is found or until the crisis is resolved.
Mental Health First Aid is becoming a prerequisite requirement in some of our workplaces today. It helps erode the stigma around mental illness.
Knowledge is power. When we understand what may be going on in another person’s mindset, we may be able to shift that mindset to prevent a negative outcome.
As a Mental Health First Aider, you will gain increased confidence in interacting with individuals experiencing a mental health problem or crisis. Using words such as Suicide, asking the question directly and being equipped on what to do next.
You can make a difference in someone else's life by becoming a Mental Health First Aider!
At least 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental health problem within the next 12 months.
Mental health hides, people are not as forthcoming when it comes to their mental health needs.
This is partially due to the lack of knowledge related to mental health concerns which often lead to fear & stigma.
20-25% of workers experience physical health problems caused by stress, anxiety and or major depression.
1 in 5 workers experience fatigue, sleeping problems, headaches and anxiety.
20% of all sick leaves are mental health-related.
Studies show that early diagnosis and intervention results in a higher recovery rate.
The economic impact of mental illness is staggering with lost productivity due to short and long term disability.
The purpose of providing mental health is to offer hope and optimism.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Sandra is exceptionally knowledgeable and professional. Coming into the course, I was expecting a lecture+notes kind-a course. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging and fun the activities were while also learning about some of the most critical aspects of Mental Health First Aid. Sandra encouraged questions and took the time to answer them using case studies, researched facts, etc. Finally, I feel very proud to have this certification. I am on my workplace's First Aid responder teams and I've seen measurable benefits from taking this course. Thank you, Sandra, for developing this course and making learning fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed the Mental Health First Aid course. I was able to gain a better understanding of several of the mental health conditions that may afflict Canadians, including warning signs and triggers, and how to approach a potential first aid situation if it came up. Sandra was a better teacher than I could have hoped for, bringing her experience as not only a Mental health First Aid Responder, but a registered nurse with many years experience dealing with patients who are suffering. She is able to add anecdotally to the cmha First Aid offering to make it a very enjoyable course.
I recently had an opportunity to attend a course taught by Sandra Wallace. Sandra came totally prepared for the task at hand. She engaged all the participants keeping the day lively and interesting. Her knowledge and enthusiasm encouraged me to want to learn more. Time spent with Sandra was time well spent
